HP AND IISI HELP LEVI STRAUSS
TO EXPAND ELECTRONIC RETAIL SERVICES GLOBALLY AND
COST-EFFECTIVELY VIA HP 3000 MAINFRAME ALTERNATIVE
U.S. Mainframe Application Leveraged and Migrated
to HP 3000 Midrange Systems, for Availability in 20 Countries
PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 30, 1992 -- Hewlett-Packard Company, Innovative
Information Systems, Inc. (IISI) and Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&CO.) today
announced that LS&CO.'s Model Stock Management (MSM) system has been
expanded cost-effectively from U.S. to global availability. The development enables
LS&CO. to provide more competitive service to its retail customers across the
world.
The expanded service was made possible in just eight months, through the
migration of the MSM from an IBM 3090 mainframe computer to a Precision
Architecture-RISC*-based, HP MPE/iX-based HP 3000 midrange business system.
LS&CO. worked on this project with IISI, a systems integrator that specializes
in migrating software from mainframes.
"We are excited about being able to quickly and cost-effectively extend the
value of MSM beyond our domestic retail customers to our international
customers as well," said Paul Benchener, director of Levi's Global Quick
Response. "MSM is positioned to be available on HP 3000s in more than 20
countries now."
MSM is a software application that provides SKU level inventory-position
analysis, enabling retailers and their LS&CO. sales representatives to increase
sales and better manage on-hand stock, for higher profitability. It is one of
the applications comprising LS&CO.'s LeviLink* services, a group of electronic
services that links the company's computers and those of its retailers and
other business partners for electronic purchasing, inventory management and
sales analyses.
"Domestically, approximately 45 percent of all orders are handled through
LeviLink," Benchener said. "Our goals are to further expand the domestic
volume and also promote this level of acceptance by our business units around
the world. We are stressing the benefits of precise inventory management,
proved time-to-market and cost-savings."
LS&CO. said it also was pleased that its international operation did not
have to purchase mainframe computers to use MSM.
"Our international operation is able to protect its hardware investment in
more than 25 of the HP 3000 midrange computers that it chose as a strategic
mainframe-alternative platform, based on cost-effectiveness and open systems,"
Benchener said.
MSM now resides on an HP 3000 in Sweden, where the pilot project was
conducted, and is available now for more than 20 countries in which LS&CO. has
retail customers and other business units using HP 3000s. Levi Strauss
International (LSI), the international division of the retail manufacturer, is
currently in the process of migrating MSM onto HP 3000s in Canada and the
Philippines.
"By working with IISI, we were able to duplicate and implement the
application quickly onto another hardware platform without having to spend
years reinventing the wheel. We had to modify the manual only slightly for the
mainframe version to provide training materials for the HP 3000 users,"
Benchener said.
"We were able to convert the 250 programs, 150 on-line screens and 500,000
lines of COBOL code in the mainframe version of MSM onto the
HP 3000, leveraging off of the years of work already done by LSI," said Mark
Symonds, vice president of IISI. "Training time for new users of MSM on the HP
3000 is minimal since LSI's MSM has the same look, feel and operation as the
mainframe version."
The MSM application on an IBM 3090 running under IBM's Customer Information
Control System (CICS), written in TELON and DB2, was converted to an HP
MPE/iX-based HP 3000 PA-RISC* business system running HP/COBOL, HP V/Plus
and
HP ALLBASE/SQL.
Today's announcement extends HP's successful strategy of working with
systems integrators such as IISI who specialize in rightsizing and
re-engineering. HP works with these integrators to help companies design new
business applications, offload existing applications and move information
systems from traditional mainframe computing to more flexible, cost-effective
alternatives.
IISI, based in Norwood, Mass., is an HP Premier Solutions Provider and is
one of the largest systems-integration, migration and consulting firms
specializing in HP commercial applications. IISI focuses on developments in the
Open Systems and UNIX areas, client/server technology and mainframe
alternatives.
